When the city centre is closed and the trains are full: what applies to traffic during Zurich's biggest summer events, how a private transfer still works and what to consider when booking.
Zurich in summer is a different city: lake baths, open-air cinemas, concerts on the shore – and some of Europe's biggest events. The Street Parade in August draws hundreds of thousands, the Züri Fäscht (every three years) even more. Anyone arriving via the airport on these dates should know how the city works then. This article explains it – and how a private transfer stays reliable despite road closures.
Street Parade: closure zone around the lake basin
On Street Parade day, the route from Utoquai via Bellevue and Quaibrücke to Hafendamm Enge is closed, the adjacent streets have restricted access and public transport runs with diversions. A transfer from the airport into the city centre remains possible, but not to every hotel door. Our drivers know the access roads that are open that day and agree a sensible pickup or drop-off point at the edge of the closure zone with you. State when booking that you are travelling on Street Parade day – we plan buffer and route accordingly.
Züri Fäscht: three days of festival
The Züri Fäscht occupies the entire lake basin from Bürkliplatz to Utoquai with stages, stalls and fireworks. For three days the city centre is largely closed to private traffic. For the arrival from the airport this means: hotels outside the centre – in Oerlikon, Zurich West or on the Zürichberg, for example – are reachable as normal; for lakeside hotels we agree the drop-off point beforehand. The return to the airport on the Monday after the festival is unproblematic.
Other summer dates
The Zurich Film Festival in late September occupies the Sechseläutenplatz area, the Theater Spektakel in August the lakeshore at the Landiwiese, and the Zurich Openair in Rümlang is only minutes from the airport. For all of them: a private transfer takes you directly to the event or the hotel, without changing trains with luggage and without searching for a parking space that does not exist on those days anyway.
Booking tips for event days
First: book early – demand during major events is high. Second: mention the event in the notes field; the driver plans route and drop-off point accordingly. Third: for the return after a long night, a fixed pickup point outside the closure zone is worth its weight in gold – and the fixed price applies at night too, as described in Late-night arrival at Zurich Airport. Fourth: anyone wanting to avoid Zurich on an event weekend finds quieter destinations an hour away in 24 hours in Zurich and on our route overview. Book now.
