Switzerland has one of the best rail networks in the world, and the station lies directly beneath Zurich Airport. Anyone claiming the train is never the right choice is not credible. Conversely, there are travel situations in which rail loses its strengths and a private transfer is clearly the better decision. This article assesses both honestly.
When the train is the right choice
You travel alone or as a couple with hand luggage, your destination is near the station of a major city, you land during the day, and you are in no hurry. In that case rail is fast, reliable and scenic – to Zurich main station in minutes, to Bern or Basel without traffic jams. Anyone who knows Switzerland will often choose the train, and rightly so.

When the transfer wins
Luggage: two large suitcases, ski bags, a pushchair – on platforms, in stairwells and when changing trains this becomes a burden. In the transfer everything stays in the boot until the driver unloads it at your front door. Which class suits which luggage is in How many suitcases really fit?.
