How Early Should You Be at Zurich Airport? Check-in, Security and the Right Pickup Time

Two hours, three hours or even more? What Zurich Airport recommends, when you should arrive earlier, why too early does not help either, how check-in and security work – and how to turn all that into the right pickup time for your transfer, with three worked examples.

"How early do I need to be at the airport?" is the question before every departure. The answer decides whether you have a relaxed coffee or run through the hall with your suitcase. Too late is risky, but far too early is not a good idea either, as Zurich Airport itself points out.

This guide summarises what the airport recommends, which factors lengthen or shorten the time and how to derive the right pickup time for your transfer step by step.

The short answer

Zurich Airport recommends being at the airport two to three hours before departure. As a rule of thumb, allow around two hours for flights within Europe and around three hours for long-haul flights. Your airline's requirements always take precedence, especially the closing time for check-in and bag drop.

Arriving much earlier, on the other hand, achieves little: most airlines' counters only open two to three hours before departure, and the airport has explicitly pointed out in the past that passengers arriving very early make the halls even busier at peak times.

SituationRecommended arrival before departure
Europe, hand luggage only, checked in onlineapprox. 1½–2 h
Europe with checked luggageapprox. 2 h
Long-haulapprox. 3 h
Start of school holidays, summer weekends, public holidaysadd approx. 30 min
Assistance, pets, unaccompanied minorsas required by the airline, usually earlier

What determines your time at the airport

The two to three hours are spread over several stations. If you know which apply to you, you can plan better:

  • Check-in and bag drop: if you check in online and only have hand luggage, you skip this step. With a suitcase you go to the counter or the self bag-drop station.
  • Security check: it is located centrally between the check-in areas. Waiting times are usually short but can rise significantly at peak times.
  • Passport control: for flights outside the Schengen area, for example to London, Dubai or New York, exit control is added.
  • Walk to the gate: gates in Dock E are reached by the underground Skymetro; allow a few extra minutes for that.

How to save time

Check in online as soon as your airline allows and load the boarding pass onto your phone. Some airlines offer an evening-before check-in at Zurich Airport, where you drop your luggage the day before; according to the airport, around two hours is then enough even at busier times.

On the Zurich Airport website you will find, under your flight number, a recommendation of when to be at the airport for that specific flight, as well as current waiting times at security. Pack your laptop, tablet, power bank and liquids so you can take them out quickly, and put belts and coins into your hand luggage before the check.

When you should arrive earlier

In some situations an extra buffer pays off. At the start of school holidays, on summer weekends and around public holidays the airport is considerably busier; the morning between roughly 6 and 8 am is a peak time anyway. If you need mobility assistance, register it with your airline at least 48 hours in advance and follow its instructions. The same applies to travelling with pets or unaccompanied children.

Special luggage such as golf or ski bags also takes a little more time at the oversize counter. And if you are flying from Zurich for the first time, allow ten minutes to find your way around.

From recommendation to pickup time

For the drive to the airport a simple calculation applies: departure time minus time at the airport minus driving time minus buffer. You will find driving times for fixed routes on our route pages. The buffer depends on the time of day and season: at rush hour around Zurich allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes, on mountain routes in winter 45 to 60 minutes.

One detail that is easily overlooked: pickups between midnight and 6 am fall under our night tariff of 20 %. For very early departures this is unavoidable, but the price is shown correctly as soon as you book, with no surprises. Detailed examples from Basel, Lucerne, Bern and the mountains are in When to leave for Zurich Airport?.

This is how the calculation looks in practice:

For arrivals: how long does it take after landing?

The opposite direction can be planned too. On flights from the Schengen area you are often in the arrivals hall 20 to 30 minutes after landing; on long-haul flights with passport control and luggage it can take longer. That is why our 60 minutes of waiting time only start with the actual landing, and the driver tracks your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Are two hours enough for a European flight from Zurich?

Usually yes. At peak times, at the start of holidays or with special luggage, better allow 30 minutes more.

How early does check-in open at Zurich Airport?

That depends on the airline; most counters open two to three hours before departure. Online check-in and evening-before check-in are often possible much earlier.

Is it a problem to be too early?

Not a problem, but rarely helpful: before the counters open you cannot drop your luggage, and at peak times the halls get even busier.

When will the driver pick me up for my return flight?

We work that out with you based on departure time, destination and address. Simply send us your flight number and we will suggest a time.

Does a pickup before 6 am cost more?

Yes, between midnight and 6 am a night tariff of 20 % applies. It is shown in the price immediately when booking.
