Geneva or Zurich: Which Airport Is Right for Your Alpine Trip?

Zermatt, Verbier, Gstaad, Interlaken, St. Moritz or Lucerne – depending on your destination, Geneva or Zurich is the better airport. An honest comparison by region, flight choice and onward journey, with an overview of which places are closer to which airport and tips for open-jaw trips.

If you are travelling to the Swiss Alps, you usually have two airports to choose from: Zurich in the north-east and Geneva in the south-west of the country. Both are well connected, both are close to major holiday regions – and yet the choice can shorten or lengthen your journey by hours.

As a transfer company in Zurich we have an interest in Zurich, but an honest answer helps you more. This guide shows which airport makes sense for which destination, what matters in terms of flights and how to combine both airports cleverly.

The two airports compared

Zurich is Switzerland's largest airport and the SWISS hub. Most long-haul flights from North America, Asia and the Middle East land here, and the choice of direct connections is the widest. Geneva is smaller but also has many European connections and some long-haul routes; it lies right on the French border and also has a French sector.

For travellers from overseas this often means: Zurich can be reached on a direct flight, Geneva only with a connection. A connection in Europe can quickly cancel out any time saved on the onward drive.

Which destination is closer to which airport?

As a rule of thumb: everything east of a line from Bern to Brig is usually quicker from Zurich, everything west of it from Geneva. In between there is a zone where both airports work similarly well.

When Zurich is the better choice

Zurich has a clear advantage for Central and eastern Switzerland: Lucerne is a little over an hour away, Engelberg just under two, Davos and St. Moritz via Graubünden. Zurich is also closer for Ticino; the drive through the Gotthard takes you straight to Lugano or Locarno.

Then there is the choice of flights: if you want to fly direct from the USA, Asia or the Middle East, Zurich often has the only non-stop connection. For the Jungfrau region and Zermatt this frequently makes up for the slightly longer drive. Our fixed routes from Zurich are on the routes page.

When Geneva is the better choice

Geneva is unbeatable for the Lake Geneva region – Lausanne, Montreux, Vevey – and for the Lower Valais with Verbier and Crans-Montana. Chamonix in France is also only around an hour from Geneva. If that is where you are going and you find a good flight to Geneva, take it.

If you still fly to Zurich, for example because of a direct flight, we will take you to western Switzerland too. We have fixed routes to Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux and Verbier.

Zermatt: the special case

Zermatt is about the same distance from both airports. From Zurich the drive goes via Bern and the Lötschberg car train or entirely by road into Valais; from Geneva along Lake Geneva and through the Rhône valley. In both cases the transfer ends in Täsch, because Zermatt is car-free.

Here the choice of flights decides. If you have a direct flight to Zurich, travel from there. Everything about the journey is in Zermatt transfer via Täsch.

In winter: roads, passes and car trains

In winter the calculation sometimes changes. Many Alpine passes are closed, and the connection from German-speaking Switzerland into Valais runs either via the Lötschberg car train between Kandersteg and Goppenstein or via the longer route along Lake Geneva. On changeover Saturdays there are waits at the car train, and the Rhône valley is busy too.

For destinations in Valais it is therefore worth checking both airports in winter and planning generously on Saturdays. For Graubünden, Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland, Zurich remains the obvious choice in winter too. More on the winter season is in The best ski resorts from Zurich Airport.

Open jaw: land in Zurich, fly home from Geneva

An elegant solution for round trips is an open-jaw ticket: arrive in Zurich, fly home from Geneva or the other way round. That way you cross Switzerland once without having to drive back. Many airlines offer such tickets without much of a surcharge.

A typical route: Zurich – Lucerne – Interlaken – Zermatt – Lake Geneva – Geneva. A transfer is convenient for arrival and the last leg with luggage, and many travellers take the train in between. How best to combine them is explained in Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?.
