Zermatt is car-free. How the transfer to Täsch works, what to expect when changing to the shuttle train, what the journey costs and how to plan ski luggage and children properly.
Zermatt is one of Switzerland's best-known destinations – and one of the few you cannot reach by car. The village at the foot of the Matterhorn has been car-free for decades; every transfer ends in Täsch, five kilometres down the valley. Knowing this beforehand makes for relaxed planning. This article explains the procedure from the arrivals hall in Zurich to the hotel door in Zermatt.
The drive: around 4 hours 45 minutes to Täsch
Our Zurich Airport–Zermatt transfer runs via the A2 through Central Switzerland, either through the Gotthard and over the Furka car-train or – depending on season and traffic – via Bern and the Lötschberg into the Valais. The roughly 237 km take around 284 minutes in normal traffic. The fixed price starts at CHF 711.00 per vehicle in the Business Class; for families and ski groups of up to 7 the booking process shows the Business & Family Class price. On request the driver makes a break along the way – just say so.
Täsch: the change in a few minutes
In Täsch the driver takes you directly to the Matterhorn Terminal. From there the shuttle train runs to Zermatt at frequent intervals; the ride takes only a few minutes. Luggage trolleys are available at the terminal, and many Zermatt hotels collect their guests at the station by electric taxi or horse-drawn carriage – ask when booking the hotel. The change is easily manageable with ski equipment and a pushchair.
Ski luggage and winter planning
We carry ski bags free of charge, up to four per vehicle; for more than two people with equipment we recommend the V-Class. In winter, allow extra buffer for the route – snowfall in the Valais and column traffic on changeover Saturdays lengthen the drive. The train to Zermatt is a beautiful journey, but with several changes and luggage across platforms. The transfer pays off for families, groups, travellers with ski equipment, late landings and anyone who does not want to change again after a long-haul flight.
