From Zurich Airport to the palm trees in a little over three to four hours: how the transfer to Lugano, Locarno, Ascona and Bellinzona works, when the Gotthard gets congested, which alternative the driver takes and which places in Ticino suit you.
Ticino is Switzerland with an Italian way of life: palm trees on the lakeshore, piazzas, grotti serving risotto and Merlot, plus mild winters and long summers. For many guests it is the finale of a Swiss trip, for others the main destination β and a surprising number travel there via Zurich.
This guide shows how the transfer from Zurich Airport to Ticino works, which route the driver takes, when things get tight at the Gotthard and which places suit which kind of stay.
The routes at a glance
Driving times are our planning values for the fixed routes including a buffer; with free-flowing traffic at the Gotthard you are often quicker.
| Destination | Distance from ZRH | Planned driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Bellinzona | around 183 km | about 219 minutes |
| Locarno | around 201 km | about 242 minutes |
| Lugano | around 210 km | about 252 minutes |
| Ascona | just beyond Locarno | price in the booking calculator |
How the price is made up
Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona are fixed routes with a fixed price per vehicle, calculated from our per-kilometre tariff. For other places in Ticino, the booking calculator works out the price for your exact address. Included are meet & greet, 60 minutes of waiting time after landing, flight tracking, luggage and child seats; between midnight and 6 am the 20 % night tariff applies.
Because the price is per vehicle, families and groups of up to seven share one V-Class β on routes of this length a noticeable difference compared with individual tickets.
The route: through the Gotthard
From the airport the drive heads south on the A4 and A2, along Lake Lucerne and through the canton of Uri to GΓΆschenen. There the Gotthard road tunnel runs under the massif to Airolo, and on the other side Ticino begins: the Leventina valley, Bellinzona with its castles, then Monte Ceneri and Lugano.
In summer you can also take the Gotthard Pass road, with the historic Tremola and its cobbled hairpin bends. This lengthens the journey but is an experience in itself; tell the driver when booking if you would like this option.
Gotthard traffic: when, and what the driver does
The Gotthard is notorious on holiday dates: before Easter, at Whitsun, at Ascension and on summer Saturdays long queues form in front of the tunnel portals β southbound on Fridays and Saturdays, northbound on Sundays and Mondays. Outside these dates traffic usually flows smoothly.
In heavy traffic the driver often switches to the A13 and the San Bernardino tunnel, which rejoins the Gotthard route at Bellinzona. He decides which route is faster based on the current situation. For a return trip on a holiday weekend, allow a generous buffer.
Which place in Ticino suits you?
Ticino is more varied than it looks on the map:
- Lugano: the largest city, with a lakeside promenade, shopping streets, a congress centre and the local mountains Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore. Ideal for city breaks and business trips.
- Locarno: the sunny spot on Lake Maggiore, known for the Piazza Grande and the film festival in August.
- Ascona: Locarno's elegant neighbour, with a lakeside promenade, boutiques and upscale hotels.
- Bellinzona: the cantonal capital with three castles that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a good base for hikes.
- Morcote and Gandria: picturesque villages on Lake Lugano, better for an excursion than for a whole stay.
- Valle Verzasca and Valle Maggia: green valleys with rivers, stone bridges and swimming spots, ideal for nature and hiking.
Best time to travel
Ticino has the mildest climate in Switzerland. In spring camellias and magnolias bloom, often weeks earlier than north of the Alps; in summer it is warm enough to swim in the lakes and rivers; autumn is the time of chestnuts and the grape harvest. In August the Locarno Film Festival fills the town and hotels book up early β more on our events page.
On to Italy
From Ticino Italy is only a few kilometres away. Lake Como lies just beyond the border at Chiasso, Milan around an hour further. Many guests combine Ticino with these destinations or fly home from Milan. Details are in From Zurich Airport to Lake Como and From Zurich to Milan.
