Around three hours from Zurich Airport to Como, Cernobbio, Bellagio or Menaggio – via the Gotthard or the San Bernardino. What to know about the route, traffic, the border crossing and the season, which lakeside village suits whom, and why a day trip rarely pays off.
Lake Como is one of Europe's best-known destinations: villas with gardens down to the water, villages on steep slopes, weddings in historic estates. Less well known is that many guests do not travel via Milan at all but via Zurich – because more long-haul flights land there and the drive to the lake is no longer than from Malpensa with the traffic around Milan.
This guide shows how the transfer from Zurich Airport to Lake Como works, which route the driver takes, what applies at the border, which village suits you and when the best time to travel is.
The route at a glance
Driving times are guide values. At the Gotthard they depend heavily on the day of travel.

The route: Gotthard or San Bernardino
The classic way follows the A4 and A2 south, through the Gotthard road tunnel into Ticino and past Bellinzona and Lugano to the border at Chiasso. From there it is only a few kilometres to Como. The route is spectacular: Lake Lucerne, the Leventina valley, then the first glimpse of palm trees on Lake Lugano.
On holiday dates, however, the Gotthard is notorious for queues in front of the tunnel portals, especially at Easter, Whitsun, Ascension and on summer Saturdays. The driver then often switches to the A13 and the San Bernardino tunnel, which rejoins the Gotthard route at Bellinzona. Which route is faster he decides based on the current traffic – you need not worry about it.
On a drive of just over three hours, a break in Ticino is pleasant, for example an espresso overlooking Lake Lugano. Just let the driver know.
The Switzerland–Italy border: what applies
Switzerland and Italy are both in the Schengen area, so there are no systematic passport checks. The border is nevertheless a customs border, and spot checks are common. All passengers need a valid passport or ID card; travellers from third countries also need the documents required for the Schengen area.
For purchases such as watches or jewellery from Switzerland, EU customs rules apply. What to note at the border in general is described in From Zurich Airport to Germany or Austria – the principles apply to Italy just the same.
Which Lake Como village suits you?
The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, and each shore has its own character:
- Como: the town at the southern end, with its cathedral, lakeside promenade and the funicular to Brunate. Quickest to reach and ideal as a base for boat trips.
- Cernobbio: a few minutes north of Como, known for luxury hotels such as the Villa d'Este and for weddings.
- Tremezzo and Menaggio: on the western shore, with the Villa Carlotta and ferries in every direction. A good compromise between accessibility and calm.
- Bellagio: the "pearl of the lake" at the tip of the peninsula, romantic but reached via narrow lakeside roads, so the drive takes longer.
- Varenna: on the eastern shore, picturesque and quieter, well connected by ferry to Bellagio and Menaggio.
Hotels and the last mile
Many hotels on Lake Como are on narrow lakeside roads or on slopes with tight access. Be sure to enter the hotel name and exact address when booking. For villas and wedding venues with a private drive, a note in the notes field on whether large vehicles may drive up to the entrance helps.
For families and groups with a lot of luggage the V-Class is the right choice; for couples who want to arrive in style, the S-Class. The booking calculator shows the price for your exact address; an overview of destinations in Italy is on the page Transfer to Como.
Best time to travel
The main season on Lake Como runs from April to October. May, June and September are warm but not overcrowded; July and August are hot and busy. Many hotels and ferry services close or run reduced services in winter, and some large hotels only reopen in spring.
For weddings and group trips in high season, we recommend fixing the transfer right after booking the hotel. If several vehicles are to arrive at the same time, write to us and we will coordinate the pickup.
Day trip from Zurich: is it worth it?
Honestly, rarely. With three hours' driving each way you only get a few hours at the lake, and with traffic at the Gotthard the time shrinks further. If you really want to experience Lake Como, plan at least one night.
If it has to be one day, an hourly booking is the better choice than two separate rides: the driver accompanies you all day, waits at every stop and can combine Como with Lugano or Lake Lugano. A lovely stop on the way back is Lugano.
On to Milan or Lake Maggiore
From Lake Como, Milan is around an hour away, as is Malpensa airport. Many guests fly into Zurich and leave via Milan – or the other way round. Both routes can be combined as an open-jaw trip with two transfers; the transfer to Milan is on the page Transfer to Milan.
