Around 280 km, three to four hours, a border and the Gotthard in between: how best to get from Zurich Airport to Milan, Malpensa, Fiera Milano or Monza. With an honest comparison of the EuroCity train, a hire car and a private transfer, plus tips on trade fairs, Fashion Week and Formula 1.
Zurich and Milan are the two economic centres on either side of the Alps, and business travellers, trade-fair visitors, fashion people and tourists travel between them every day. Many land on a long-haul flight in Zurich with Milan as their actual destination – or combine Switzerland and northern Italy in one trip.
This guide compares the options honestly: when is the EuroCity the best choice, when a private transfer, and what is a hire car worth it for? Plus information on the route, the border, trade fairs and events.
The route at a glance
Driving times are guide values; at the Gotthard they depend heavily on the day of travel.

Option 1: the EuroCity
Direct EuroCity trains run between Zurich HB and Milano Centrale through the Gotthard Base Tunnel; the journey takes around three and a half hours. From Zurich Airport you first need to travel to Zurich HB and change there.
For solo travellers with light luggage whose destination is near Milano Centrale, the train is often the best choice: fast, comfortable, with a place to work. It is less ideal with a lot of luggage, for destinations outside the centre such as Fiera Milano in Rho, Monza or Malpensa, for groups and for late arrivals in Zurich.
Option 2: the private transfer
With a transfer the chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your destination without changing: a hotel in Brera, an office in Porta Nuova, the exhibition centre in Rho or Malpensa for an onward flight. The fixed price is per vehicle and shown in advance; up to seven people travel in the V-Class.
The transfer is particularly worthwhile for groups and families, for business travellers who want to call or work on the way, for trade-fair visitors with material and for anyone who does not want to drag suitcases through two stations after a long-haul flight. An overview of destinations in Italy is on the page Transfer to Milan.
Option 3: the hire car
A hire car makes sense if you want to visit many places in northern Italy. For Milan itself it is impractical: the city centre has access restrictions with charges, parking is scarce and expensive, and one-way rentals across the border often carry high drop-off fees. If you rent in Switzerland and return the car in Italy, check this carefully in advance.
The route and the border
Depending on traffic, the driver chooses the Gotthard road tunnel or the San Bernardino. The Gotthard has queues on holiday dates, especially at Easter, Whitsun and on summer Saturdays; the San Bernardino is then often faster. After Lugano comes the border at Chiasso and the motorway to Milan.
Switzerland and Italy are in the Schengen area, so there are no systematic passport checks, but there are customs checks. All passengers need valid ID. How to continue to Lake Como, which is almost on the way, is described in From Zurich Airport to Lake Como.
Trade fairs and events in Milan
Some dates bring particularly many travellers from Zurich to Milan:
- Salone del Mobile in April at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre in Rho – the world's most important furniture fair; hotels are full months in advance.
- Milan Fashion Week in February and September, plus the menswear shows in January and June.
- Formula 1 at Monza in early September, with heavy traffic around the Autodromo.
- La Scala's season opening on 7 December, one of the social highlights of the year.
Milan or Malpensa as your departure airport
Many travellers combine Zurich and Milan as an open-jaw trip: arrive in Zurich, fly home from Malpensa or the other way round. That saves the return trip over the Alps and often opens up better connections. The transfer to Malpensa is on the page Transfer to Milano Malpensa.
For departures from Malpensa, plan the drive generously: traffic around Milan can be heavy in the morning, and there are occasional waits at the border.
A Zurich–Milan business trip in one day
For meetings in Milan with a return flight the same evening, an hourly booking is often the most efficient solution: the driver picks you up in Zurich, waits during your meetings in Milan and takes you back to the airport. You use the driving time for calls and emails, and the invoice comes with VAT shown – more in Corporate transfers in Zurich.
With several meetings in the city, for example in Porta Nuova and near the Fiera, it saves hunting for taxis between addresses. Enter all stops in the booking form so the driver can plan the route.
