Zurich Airport to Bern: Fixed Price, Driving Time and the Best Way Into the Federal City

Bern is Switzerland's federal city, seat of parliament, the federal administration and most embassies – and at the same time one of Europe's most beautiful old towns, with six kilometres of arcades and the Zytglogge clock tower. Bern has no major airport; anyone arriving from overseas or on a direct flight almost always lands in Zurich.

This guide shows how the transfer to Bern works: pricing logic, the route with service areas, rush hours, how the old town and government district are reached, onward travel to the Oberland and the honest question of when the train is enough.

How the price is made up

The Zurich Airport–Bern transfer has a fixed price per vehicle, calculated from our per-kilometre tariff for the 117 km route. It depends only on the vehicle class and is shown in the booking form before you confirm. Traffic, roadworks or a slow baggage belt change nothing.

The route: on the A1 across the Swiss plateau

From the airport the drive follows the northern bypass through the Gubrist tunnel into the Limmat valley and then west on the A1: past Baden, Lenzburg and Aarau, through the Wigger valley to the Härkingen junction, where the north–south A2 crosses. The A1 continues via Oensingen and Kirchberg to Bern, which you reach via the Wankdorf or Neufeld exits.

On a drive of just over two hours, a short break is no problem. There are several service areas on the way, including Würenlos shortly after Zurich, Kölliken in Aargau, Gunzgen near Härkingen and Grauholz just before Bern. Simply tell the driver when you would like to stop.

When it takes longer

The A1 between Zurich and Bern is one of the busiest routes in Switzerland. Congestion is most likely at the Gubrist and in the Limmat valley during commuter hours (weekdays roughly 6:30–9 am and 4–7 pm), around the Härkingen junction, and on Friday afternoons when holiday traffic heads for western Switzerland and the Oberland.

Who travels to Bern

The route has a particularly varied clientele:

• Diplomacy and administration: guests of embassies, federal offices and international organisations. On request the organisation's name appears on the sign, and the invoice goes straight to the institution.
• Medical travel: patients and relatives on their way to the Inselspital or private clinics – often with a lot of luggage and a wish for a calm ride.
• Fairs and congresses: events at the BERNEXPO grounds near Wankdorf.
• Tourists: the old town, the bear park and the rose garden as a first stop before the Bernese Oberland.

Arriving in Bern: old town and government district

Bern's old town sits on a peninsula in a loop of the Aare and is partly traffic-restricted. Hotels such as the Bellevue Palace next to the Federal Palace or those around the station are driven to directly; for addresses in the old town lanes the chauffeur drops you at the nearest possible point and helps with the luggage.

For embassies, offices or clinics, note the exact entrance in the notes field. In the government district in particular there are security zones where only certain access roads are open.

Onward to the Bernese Oberland

Bern is the gateway to the Oberland. Thun is around 25 minutes away, Interlaken just under an hour, Gstaad a little over an hour. Transfer or train? An honest assessment

Bern can be reached from Zurich Airport by direct InterCity trains, and the connection is excellent. If you travel alone with hand luggage and stay at or near Bern station, the train serves you well.

The transfer pays off if you travel as several people, have a lot of luggage or children with you, your destination is outside the centre (Muri, Köniz, Ittigen or the clinics on the edge of town), you land late, or you want to continue straight to the Oberland. Seasons and events in Bern

Some dates make Bern busier than usual. On the fourth Monday in November the Zibelemärit turns the old town into a huge onion and vegetable market, and many streets are closed. In spring the BEA public fair fills the BERNEXPO grounds, and in July the Gurten festival draws tens of thousands onto Bern's local mountain. During parliamentary sessions, hotels in the government district also book up quickly.

The return to Zurich Airport

For European flights allow around two hours at the airport, for long-haul about three, plus the planned driving time and a 30-minute buffer for the A1. For a late-morning departure that means a pickup in Bern early in the morning. We are happy to suggest an exact time.
