Jungfraujoch, Titlis or Pilatus: Which Mountain Suits Your Swiss Trip?

Three of Switzerland's most famous excursion mountains – plus Rigi, Schilthorn and Gornergrat – compared honestly: altitude, experience, snow guarantee, time needed from Zurich and who each mountain is worth it for. With tips on combining the excursion with your journey.

Hardly any Swiss trip is complete without a mountain excursion. The only question is: which one? The Jungfraujoch, Titlis and Pilatus are the best-known names, plus the Rigi, Schilthorn and Gornergrat. All are spectacular, but they differ greatly in altitude, experience, effort and price.

This guide compares the mountains honestly and helps you find the right one for your trip – depending on how much time you have, where you are staying and what you want to experience.

Jungfraujoch: the big experience

The Jungfraujoch is Europe's highest railway station and for many the highlight of a Swiss trip. You travel from Grindelwald on the Eiger Express to the Eiger Glacier and then on the Jungfrau Railway up through the Eiger and the Mönch. At the top you find the view of the Great Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps, the Ice Palace, the Sphinx observation terrace and snow all year round.

The drawbacks: it is the most expensive of the excursions, takes a whole day and depends heavily on the weather – in fog you see little. Because of the altitude, travellers with heart or circulation problems should seek medical advice beforehand. It is best to stay in the Jungfrau region and decide in the morning based on the weather. More in Jungfrau region for beginners.

Titlis: snow guaranteed, close to Zurich

The Titlis above Engelberg is the glacier mountain closest to Zurich. The Rotair, one of the world's first revolving cable cars, takes you up to around 3,000 metres. At the top the Cliff Walk, a spectacular suspension bridge on the rock face, a glacier cave and snow even in high summer await.

The Titlis is ideal if you want to experience snow and glaciers without planning a night in the mountains. As a day trip from Zurich or Lucerne it is very doable; you reach Engelberg from the airport in just under two hours. See Transfer to Engelberg.

Pilatus: Lucerne's local mountain

Pilatus is the classic for guests in Lucerne. In the summer half of the year you ride up on the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad; all year round you go from Kriens by gondola and aerial cableway. Combined with a boat trip across Lake Lucerne, this makes the popular "Golden Round Trip".

Pilatus only takes half a day and combines well with a stroll around Lucerne. There are no glaciers or eternal snow here, but a wide view over the lake and the Alps. How to spend a day in Lucerne is described in Lucerne day trip.

Rigi, Schilthorn and Gornergrat

The Rigi, the "Queen of the Mountains", is gentler and family-friendly, with Europe's first mountain railway from Vitznau. It is free with the Swiss Travel Pass, and the sunset over the Swiss plateau is legendary.

The Schilthorn above Mürren offers a panoramic view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau from the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and is a good, often cheaper alternative to the Jungfraujoch. The Gornergrat in Zermatt is the mountain for the perfect Matterhorn view and is worthwhile for anyone staying in Zermatt anyway.

Which mountain suits you?

A quick decision guide:

  • Only one day and you want snow: Titlis.
  • The really big experience, time for an overnight stay: Jungfraujoch.
  • Half a day in Lucerne: Pilatus or Rigi.
  • With children and a Swiss Travel Pass: Rigi.
  • Eiger panorama at a more moderate price: Schilthorn.
  • Matterhorn: Gornergrat.

Combining the excursion and the journey

Many guests cleverly combine the mountain excursion with their journey. If you travel to Engelberg, you are on the Titlis the next morning. If you stay in Grindelwald or Wengen, you set off straight for the Jungfraujoch. And if you stay in Lucerne, Pilatus and Rigi are on your doorstep.

For a mountain day from Zurich without an overnight stay, an hourly booking is practical: the driver takes you to the valley station, waits during the excursion and drives you back in the evening. For destinations with an overnight stay, simply book the transfer to your hotel. A complete week's plan is in Switzerland in 7 days from Zurich.

Practical tips for every mountain excursion

Check the weather and the mountain railway's webcams in the morning; in fog another day is often worthwhile. Even in summer bring a warm jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen – at 3,000 metres it is cold and the sun is strong. In high season reservations for the Jungfraujoch and Titlis are recommended.

Many mountain railways take a maintenance break in spring and late autumn; when that happens is explained in Best time to visit Switzerland.
