Zurich Airport to Basel: What the Transfer Costs, How Long It Takes and When It Beats the Train

Fixed price from CHF 258.50, around 1 hour 45 minutes, door to door without changes: the honest comparison for the Zurich Airport–Basel route – for trade-fair visitors, families and pharma travellers.

Basel is Switzerland's second great gateway after Zurich – home of the pharmaceutical industry, trade-fair city (Art Basel, Swissbau) and tri-border area with Germany and France. Despite its own EuroAirport, many travellers land in Zurich because that is where the long-haul flights and most direct connections arrive. This guide answers the three questions that follow: what does the transfer cost, how long does it take, and when is it preferable to the train?

Price: fixed per vehicle, no surprises

Our Zurich Airport–Basel transfer costs from CHF 258.50 in the Business Class (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, up to 2 people and 2 suitcases) – per vehicle, not per person, including VAT, meet & greet in the arrivals hall, 60 minutes of waiting time after landing and flight tracking. For families and groups of up to 7, the booking process shows the Business & Family Class (V-Class) price transparently; for maximum comfort choose the Premium Class (S-Class). All vehicle classes are on the vehicles page, the full price list on the prices page.

The price applies day and night, at weekends and on public holidays. There is no surcharge for luggage, none for child seats and none if your flight is delayed.

Duration: around 1 hour 45 minutes via the A3

The 86 km route follows the A1 and A3 through the Fricktal to Basel. In normal traffic we plan around 103 minutes from the arrivals hall to your address. During rush hours around Zurich – weekday mornings and late afternoons – it can take longer; how to calculate the pickup time accordingly is explained in our article When to leave for Zurich Airport?.

Transfer or train? An honest assessment

The train from Zurich Airport to Basel SBB is a good connection – for solo travellers with hand luggage staying near the station, often the sensible choice. The transfer wins as soon as at least one of these applies: you travel as two or more (the fixed price is per vehicle), you have several suitcases or trade-fair material, your destination is outside the city centre (Allschwil, Riehen, Münchenstein, Pratteln or across the border in Weil am Rhein and Saint-Louis), you land late in the evening, or after a long-haul flight you simply do not want to change trains. For trade-fair weeks there is one more point: the journey can be fixed months in advance, when the city is already fully booked.

Practical notes for Basel

Enter the complete address when booking – Basel has many one-way streets and the driver plans the approach accordingly. For trade fairs we recommend booking as soon as travel dates are fixed; book the return to the airport in the same step. And if you travel on: EuroAirport, Freiburg im Breisgau and Mulhouse are within range of an individual request from Basel – just send us the destination.
